As for official voting on November 2nd --the Presidential race remains razor-thin and lawyers are standing by --just in case. It's becoming increasingly clear that "Voter Turnout" will decide the 2004 race. In New Hampshire -- there's talk of a record turnout -- clerks are already seeking extra ballots. Harvard University Professor Thomas Patterson has been tracking voting trends for years. His latest book "Vanishing Voter" documents a 4-decade "decline" in voter participation --but, what about THIS year's election? |

Also growing -- an interest in Tracing one's genealogy. Margo Burns of Manchester would be the first to tell you -- it can lead to some very interesting findings. Burns works for the Manchester public school system by day -- and is a history sleuth in her spare time. After extensive digging -- Burns discovered she was a descendent of Rebecca Nurse, a famous accused Salem Witch. She's now in the process of writing a book to set the record straight on her ancestor -- and is here to tell us more about her journey of discovery. |

How CHALLENGING is that. Q MARGO: What did you find out about Rebecca Nurse that was different than historical accounts you had read? Q MARGO: What was the EVIDENCE used against her? Q MARGO: You've started an E-MAIL DISCUSSION list for Salem Witch Trial Descendents -- what have you heard? Q MARGO: What MYTHS do you want to shatter about Salem, Mass back in the 16-90's? Q MARGO: Why do the Salem Witch Trials -- still INTRIGUE us? Q One account defines Witchcraft, also called Wicca, as an ancient European religion that pre-dates Christianity and Judaism. It focuses on women’s benign and magical powers and only became associated with devil worship after the advent of Christianity. TRUE? Q Do we have many WITCHES here in NH? Q Did Witch Trials revolve around GREED and Land? Q Finding Witches became a crusade in the 17th century. One account says: The witch scare launched a PURITAN INQUISITION that took 25 lives -- filled prisons with innocent people, and frayed the soul of a Massachusetts community called Salem. Q How difficult was it for you to TRACE your family history -- and what advice would you give others? What impact has the internet have on searches such as yours. New Hampshire expects record turnout; clerks seek extra ballots dewfn CONCORD, N.H. - New Hampshire election officials expect so many voters to turn out on Tuesday that some plan to photocopy extra ballots in advance. Portsmouth City Clerk Kellie Barnaby says so many new voters have registered that they outnumber the supply of ballots sent by the state. Barnaby has asked the state for more. She says if she runs out of those, she'll use leftover absentee ballots, then photocopies. Keene election officials also have asked for extra ballots, fearing a crush of election day registrations by Keene State College students. Nashua City Clerk Paul Bergeron said he plans to copy an extra 15 hundred ballots in advance for each of the city's nine wards. Secretary of State Bill Gardner expects a record 600 thousand votes to be cast. AP-NY-10-28-04 0638EDT |
